Opvallend: Studie suggereert dat renners tijd verspillen met dragen ijsvest tijdens de warming-up

Een studie van het wetenschappelijk tijdschrift PLOS ONE suggereert dat het dragen van een ijsvest tijdens de warming-up geen zin heeft. De studie onderzocht methoden van vooraf koelen in een veeleisende opwarming bij getrainde mannelijke wegwielrenners.

Ondanks dat ijsvesten veelvuldig worden gebruikt door veel professionele wielrenners, lijken de voordelen van de vesten zo marginaal te zijn dat ze niet worden geregistreerd. De onderzoekers observeerden wel een toename van 'thermische gewaarwording' bij de wielrenners zonder vesten, wat opmerkelijk afwezig was wanneer ijsvesten werden gebruikt. Dit suggereert dat ijsvesten in ieder geval een 'gunstig effect hebben op thermische gewaarwording', zelfs als dit zich niet vertaalt naar een hogere gemiddelde snelheid over een twintig minuten durende test op de wielerbaan.

De test bestond uit twintig minuten rijden op een wielerbaan, waarbij zowel de totale afstand als de afstand afgelegd per blok van twee minuten, werden geregistreerd als indicatoren van "wielrenprestaties". Ook werden de kerntemperatuur van het lichaam, hartslag, en de percepties van de renners met betrekking tot inspanning, thermisch comfort en thermische gewaarwording geregistreerd.

Om de effecten van verschillende koeltechnieken te onderzoeken, voerden de onderzoekers hun tests uit op het Caribische eiland Guadeloupe, Frans-West-Indië. De omstandigheden waren, zoals te verwachten, warm en vochtig. De temperatuur was ongeveer 28°C en de luchtvochtigheid bedroeg 76%.

Geen statistisch verschil waarneembaar

Als er naar de resultaten van de zeven wielrenners wordt gekeken, valt het op dat er geen statistisch significant verschil in de afgelegde afstand gedurende de twintig minuten tussen de drie testomstandigheden te zien is. Er is ook geen significant verschil in de hartslag van de wielrenners of hun Beoordeelde Perceptie van Inspanning (RPE).

Er was echter 'een toename van thermische gewaarwording bij de renners zonder ijsvest'. Dit leidde de onderzoekers tot de conclusie dat andere methoden om de prestaties van goed getrainde mannelijke wielrenners op een wielerbaan tijdens korte afstandstijdritten in hete en vochtige omstandigheden te verbeteren, moeten worden overwogen.
